About
Informal Engineer is a lab that publishes free engineered guides and research (homelab, self-hosted AI, the tools around them) and sells the two things a guide can't be: curated parts kits andmanaged hosting. It's run byMesh Rahman, a licensed engineer who documents the gap between what the specs say and what reality delivers.

What "tested" means here. If a guide says tested, I ran the procedure on the hardware and versions named in its Tested-on block, on the date shown. If part of a procedure comes from documentation rather than my bench, the guide says so at that step.
Numbers. Costs are what I actually paid, in CAD, dated. Benchmarks state their conditions. No "blazing fast", a number or nothing.
Corrections and changelogs. Every guide keeps a visible changelog. If something breaks in a new version, the fix gets a dated entry, not a silent edit.
Affiliate disclosure. Kit links are affiliate links where a program exists, disclosed on every page they appear. Nothing on a kit list I haven't bought and used myself. No sponsored content, no third-party pixels, self-hosted cookieless analytics only.
Abandoned experiments stay published. Negative results are data. The honesty is the brand.
